Karak
Karak is the headquarters of Karak District in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. It is 123 km from Peshawar on the main Indus Highway between Peshawar and Karachi. It is located at 33°7'12N.
History
Until 1940, this whole area was ruled by the Teri Nawab. Teri was the capital and the only Tehsil. It had tappas (satrapies): Teri, Seni, Khurram and Barak. Between 1940 and 1982 it was a part of Kohat, after the July 1, 1982, it has been an independent district with Karak as its capital. The district is predominantly populated by Khattak tribe, one of the famous tribes of Afghan.
Administration
As well as being the district capital, Karak is also the chief city of Karak tehsil, which is a subdivision of the district. For administrative purpose the district is divided into three parts, the upper, lower and the central. The central part includes Karak city and other small surrounding areas. It is divided in three tehsils vis Karak, Banda Daud Shah and Takht-e-Nasrati. Tehsil Banda Daud and Tehsil karak is mountainous area, but Tehsil Takhte Nasrati is plain and the desert extends up to Dera ismail Khan. District Karak has boundaries with District Kohat, District Hangu, District Bannu, District Lakki Marwat and District Mianwali. The site of Kala Bagh Dam is to the south of District karak. The district is rich in natural gas, crude oil,salt, coal, gypsym and silica. The gas reservoirs are among the biggest in the country. The district is represented in the provincial assembly by two elected MPAs who represent the following constituency.
